Background

Raising a glass to our friends.

Mixology Masters was created at the start of the pandemic as we watched so many of our friends closed the doors to their restaurants and bars, uncertain if they would ever be able to open again.

With that in mind, the show is a celebration and acknowledgment of a craft that is essential to the hospitality industry. A good bartender can elevate a guest’s dining experience.

A Mixologist is much like a well-trained chef, embracing a culinary approach to blending cocktails and possessing a deep understanding of the history behind spirits, liqueurs, and the flavours they blend with.

Furthermore, they study the freshness of ingredients, flavour compounds, and even the chemistry of components to produce innovative and excellent cocktails.

Synopsis

Taking a shot.

Mixology Masters is a non-scripted television series that captures the art and craft of cocktail making in a competition format that pits some of the best bartenders in the country against each other.

Each week, contestants demonstrate their skills through a series of unique challenges that test their speed, ability to put a spin on classics and develop a brand new récipe. Season one is 24 episodes of 22 min where contestants will compete for the approval of our judges in five different categories: Taste, Balance, Presentation, Application of Theme, and Creativity.

These challenges will require precise skill, creativity in presentation, and drink selection to pair with local dishes—a true mixologist’s test!

The winning bartender receives the coveted title of “Mixology Master” and a $10,000 prize.

Linda founded the Alberta Beverage Awards, the largest award program for wines, beers and spirits in the province, now in its ninth year. Linda earned a reputation as one of Calgary’s prime food, wine, and restaurant experts.

Mixology is a tv series that captures the art and skill of drink making in a competition format that pits some of the best mixologists against each other in a battle against time and each other.

In each episode, bartenders compete in an elimination contest to blend, mix, or stir up the perfect drink.

Over the 24 episodes, contestants will compete for the approval of our judges in 5 different categories and with the pressure of time. Taste, Balance, Presentation, Application of theme, and Creativity.

This is the true mixologist test, as they will be presented with challenges that require precise skill, creativity in presentation, and drink selection to pair with local dishes.

At the end of each episode, one contestant will be eliminated until we crown the Mixology Master

Episode One

Makgati Molebatsi

Makgati Molebatsi quit her 30-year career in marketing and communications at the end of 2015 to pursue her passion for visual art. She has a contemporary art collection worth about R1.2 million. Her collection amasses to 40 significant pieces and she collects for enjoyment and appreciation. One of her favourite artworks, which almost eluded her, is a mesmerizing installation of 1200 keys intricately strung into a scarf by Liza Grobler titled Easy Access Scarf.

Episode Two

Clyde Terry

After qualifying as a chartered accountant, Clyde Terry decided to neglect his father’s ambition to follow the profession but to convert his hobby of collecting rare antiques into a fully-fledged career instead. Today, Terry is one of the leading antique dealers in South Africa with a personal collection of 83 unique and rare antiquities that have a special place in his heart. His collection is worth approximately R4.9 million.

Episode Three

As a prominent figure in ‘showbiz’, it’s tempting to presume that Masego ‘Maps’ Maponyane’s continuous showcasing of personal style is merely a part of his job. Yet, his love affair, specifically with accentuated headgear, dates back to a time before his career even took shape. Maponyane has invested in over 200 headpieces worth around R180,000 that have become an extension of his everyday life.

Eric Leeson

The wave of millennial cultural influence has birthed a new form of collectibles, and Eric Leeson is rooted in the game. Leeson fell in love with sneakers at the age of 13 but only began collecting at the age of 16 with a pair of marked-down cherry-red Jordan 11 Retro Lows gifted to him by his father. He has since accumulated a fashionable footwear collection of 350 pairs which he recently downsized to 250 and they are worth R625 000.

Marc Pendlebury

For some people, the pleasure alone of consuming a premium whisky is enough, but not for Marc Pendlebury. In 2007, he progressed from whisky drinker to collector when he began purchasing more whisky bottles than he consumed. He’s since collected about 1,200 distilled bottles of the finest whiskies from across the world – some acquired for consumptive pleasure and others for appreciation. His collection is worth R2.5 million.

Justuis Pieterse Manefelt

Justuis Pieterse Manefelt collects Barbie dolls – and he is proud of it. Manefelt, who has a 10-year-old daughter, is also the proud father of over 1,500 Barbie dolls worth around R1,5 million. According to Manefelt, his daughter is not so much into Barbie’s anymore, but when she was younger she used to play with certain Barbie dolls.

Hendrik Botha

Justuis Pieterse Manefelt collects Barbie dolls – and he is proud of it. Manefelt, who has a 10-year-old daughter, is also the proud father of over 1,500 Barbie dolls worth around R1,5 million.
